Film of the Month – January 2016

January is traditionally a strong month at the cinema, with a lot of the awards hopefuls getting UK releases. That means some tough decisions for our top 3 of the month and it was particularly tough to leave out the outstanding ‘Room‘, but here are our favourites…

3. A War (Krigen)

One of the nominees for ‘Best Foreign Language Film’ at next month’s Oscars, this Danish film is a morally complex tale of a man forced to come to terms with a decision he made in the midst of battle whilst in Afghanistan. Impeccably crafted with an intelligent and thought provoking script, this is European cinema at its absolute finest.

2. The Revenant

Last year’s Oscar winner Alejandro González Iñárritu returns with a thrilling survival tale featuring Leonardo Di Caprio as a fur trapper who was attacked by a bear and left for dead by his men. Gorgeous to look at and technically outstanding, this is an incredible cinematic experience.

1. The Big Short

This terrific film about the financial crisis of 2008 is wickedly funny, filled with great performances and is superbly directed with originality and flair. We loved it!
