Follows the Jackass crew as they perform their final series of dangerous stunts and pranks, marking the end of the franchise.
‘Jackass: Best and Last’ is, supposedly, the final outing for Johnny Knoxville and company, bringing to a close a series that has somehow endured for almost 30 years. Like the previous films, it functions less as a conventional movie and more as an extended episode of the television series, stitched together with nostalgic flashbacks and callbacks to some of the group’s most memorable moments over the years.
The cast are now mostly in their 50s, and there is an inevitable question of whether they’re simply too old to still be doing this. To their credit, there remains a surprising inventiveness to the stunts and practical jokes they come up with, finding new ways to inflict pain, embarrassment and humiliation on themselves and each other. It may not be sophisticated, but after three decades they still manage to surprise. As ever, the humour ranges from genuinely clever to utterly disgusting, often within the space of a few minutes. Much of it is incredibly juvenile, but it also made me laugh far more often than I expected. There’s something timeless about the simplicity of the formula, and yes, watching someone get hit in the groin when they least expect it is still funny, no matter how old you are.
With nearly 30 years of stunts behind them, ‘Jackass’ has more than earned its place in popular culture. If this really is the last instalment, it feels like an appropriate way to bow out, reminding us why the series has remained so entertaining for so long, even if its appeal has always been gloriously childish.
