2024 End of Year Review – Part 1: The Worst 5 Films of the Year

We kick off our review of 2024 with the year’s worst films; and by worst films I mean the worst ones I actually bothered to go and see, so some of the truly dreadful stuff may not appear here as it does on other lists – either way, these are some of the movies we’d highly recommend avoiding…

5. Kinds of Kindness

Kinds of Kindness

Yorgos Lanthimos will make an appearance in another end of year list for the excellent ‘Poor Things‘, but his second film of 2024 was simply too weird for me and I really struggled to get on board with this dark anthology comedy.

Where to watch (or not watch 😉 ): Kinds of Kindness

4. The Color Purple

The Color Purple

Oscar bait in its purest form, this musical version of Alice Walker’s classic novel is pandering and cloying, with forgettable songs, poor pacing and I really disliked it.

Where to watch (or not watch 😉 ): The Color Purple

3. Drive-Away Dolls

Drive-Away Dolls

The Coen Brothers have decided after many years making movies together to go their separate ways, and while Joel has started well (‘The Tragedy of Macbeth‘), Ethan’s first effort (with his wife Tricia Cooke) is not good. A lesbian road trip comedy, it has many of the black comedy stylings of some of the Coen’s work as a pair, but it lacks the quality and if it wasn’t for Ethan’s involvement, you’d be calling it a Coen Brothers knock off!

Where to watch (or not watch 😉 ): Drive-Away Dolls

2. Megalopolis

Megalopolis

Francis Ford Coppola’s long in development passion project is frankly an absolutely bizarre mess that is the type of movie that can only be made and released with the determined backing of a director unwilling to listen to any advice or reason. Despite all its production problems, there was a hope that this clearly talented director had pulled something special out the bag, but sadly, he has not.

Where to watch (or not watch 😉 ): Megalopolis

1. Argylle

Argylle

By rights this position should probably go to ‘Megalopolis‘, but for all its faults it was not as bad as ‘Argylle‘, a truly terrible spy comedy that is shoddily written, tacky and cheap looking (despite costing £200m), and it is my least favourite movie of 2024.

Where to watch (or not watch 😉 ): Argylle

Narrowly avoiding this list: Borderlands, Timestalker
