Film of the Month – May

It’s been another excellent month for films, with a variation of excellent releases, particularly from foreign territories. Our three favourites were all made outwith the US and the UK, with two coming from France. Here’s our view…

3. The Connection

The Connection‘ is a stylish crime thriller about a drug smuggling ring that operated between Marseille and New York in the 1970’s. To some extents, the film is most influenced by US crime cinema, with ‘The French Connection‘ (which tells a similar story from the US side) and Michael Mann’s ‘Heat‘ the obvious examples.

2. Girlhood

The second French film on this month’s list, ‘Girlhood‘ is an excellent coming of age drama about a young girl growing up in troubled surroundings. With an excellent soundtrack and moving performances from it’s non professional cast, ‘Girlhood‘ is a fantastic film that really captures the hopes and fears of teenage life.

1. Mad Max: Fury Road

George Miller’s return to the ‘Mad Max‘ franchise is a breathtaking experience that has to be seen on the big screen. With stunning special effects and a momentum that won’t let up, ‘Mad Max: Fury Road‘ is an energetic thrill ride that has to be seen to be believed
