Brave rabbit cop Judy Hopps and her friend, the fox Nick Wilde, team up again to crack a new case, the most perilous and intricate of their careers.
‘Zootropolis 2’ (called ‘Zootopia 2’ in most other countries) is a sequel to the 2016 film ‘Zootropolis’, an animated buddy cop movie set in the titular city where animals function much like humans. Like the first film, it follows unlikely duo Judy Hopps (Ginnifer Goodwin) and Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), a rabbit and a fox who are now official members of the Zootopia Police Department after their efforts in the first film, with a new case on the horizon. If you liked the first film, I suspect you’ll enjoy this, as in essence, it is more of the same.
The story on this occasion centres on their attempts to track down a snake, previously believed to not exist in Zootopia, with this forming part of a narrative involving the wealthy Lynxley family, who are descendents of the founder of the city, Ebenezer Lynxley. This sets off another conspiracy tale with plenty of nods to classic movies of the past (some more overt than others), with ‘Chinatown’ once again looming large over proceedings. There’s plenty for both adults and children to enjoy, from the zippy story and animation to the clever homages and I thought the voicework was a bit more memorable than the first time around, with newly added characters providing a bit of freshness to proceedings.
It’s taken nearly 10 years for this sequel to appear, which is fairly long as far as popular movie sequels go, and I suspect those that enjoyed the first film will find this was worth the wait.
